Unity Month Kickoff: Meet Lydia Hamilton Smith & Thaddeus Stevens

  • Goodridge Freedom Center & Underground Railroad Museum 123 E. Philadelphia Street York, PA 17401 USA (map)

“Meet Lydia Hamilton Smith & Thaddeus Stevens”

Sponsored by CGA Law Firm

First Friday, January 4th from 4-8 pm

Lydia and Thaddeus will share their stories as abolitionists in “Chautauqua style.” Thaddeus Stevens was a fearsome reformer, who never backed down from a fight. He urged Congress to quickly pass the 13th Amendment, which would outlaw slavery forever. Lydia Hamilton Smith was the long-time housekeeper of Thaddeus Stevens, who rose to become a prominent African-American business woman. Together, they worked tirelessly and successfully to ensure that many freedom seekers became freed men and women!

Entrance Fee: $3 per adult and $1 per student/senior
